The Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations says they created this week’s conference in response to calls from First Nations who say they are dealing with epidemic levels of crystal meth and opioid use among their population.

The three-day wellness conference hosted by the FSIN has attracted 550 attendees to Saskatoon

The conference focus, according to organizers, is on improving justice, safety and health issues.

The FSIN says it is assembling some of the country’s leading experts to share their insights. Sessions include instructions on how to create a circle of care to help those suffering from addictions, ways to address homelessness, and how to implement gang prevention strategies.

The keynote speakers include Reggie Leach, former NHL player from Berens River First Nation, Manitoba and on Wednesday Chief Clarence Louie with the Osoyoos Indian Band in British Columbia.
