The family of a 93-year-old woman who died at St. Paul’s Hospital, after entering hospital with a bladder infection attended the Saskatchewan Legislature on Tuesday. Seniors Critic Matt Love explained that Lois McGuire was at the hospital for many months before she died. When she arrived, she was able to talk, walk, eat and drink, but she developed delirium and experts believe it is because of the lack of movement and stimulation.
Love stated during Question Period that there just aren’t enough staff to go around. Lois McGuire’s family joined the Official Opposition to call for more efforts to stabilize the health care system and more supports for seniors.
Minister for rural and remote health and for seniors, Everett Hindley, gave his condolences and said he would speak with the family. He said he couldn’t speak to any specific cases but the Saskatchewan Health Authority does follow-up when there are concerns to continue improving quality of care. Hindley added that the government is hiring more nurses, doctors, continuing care aids and other front line workers and there are now five geriatricians working in Saskatchewan.
