The Leader of the Official Opposition pointed out in Question Period today (Thurs) at the Saskatchewan Legislature that the government has been in charge of the carbon tax for large emitters since 2018. Carla Beck wondered why there is no plan for the money, and gave a few suggestions. She suggested it could be used to give people a break on their power bills, to create more jobs with bigger pay cheques by building out renewables, and to help people and businesses with energy efficiency retrofits.

Premier Moe answered that the money would quite likely be invested in areas like Estevan, where coal fire power is being phased out, but they haven’t received it yet from the federal government. He noted that the carbon tax is supported by the NDP, but Beck clarified that the provincial NDP is not in favour of the tax and not in favour of the increase coming up on April 1st. The tax is set to increase by three cents a litre on April 1st, to 14 cents per litre of gas.
