The Corrections, Policing and Public Safety Minister has given notice to the federal government that Saskatchewan will be ending its agreement to hold immigration detainees for the Canadian Border Services Agency, as of September 30th. Minister Christine Tell says last year, 16 people were held in Saskatchewan correctional centres on an immigration hold. There were 14 in 2021, 19 in 2020 and 23 in 2019. Tell adds that Saskatchewan will no longer hold anyone solely on immigration matters, but it will continue to hold non-Canadian citizens who have criminal charges until those matters have been concluded. The province is working with the CBSA to develop a transition plan.
