The Meewasin Valley Authority is concerned about people wanting to explore a little too close to the river now that it’s spring and is urging people not to do so. Manager of Planning and Conservation, Mike Velonas, explains that now that it is warming up, there is a higher flow of water from the melting snow that can cut into the ice and soil along the riverbank, causing shelves of unsteady snow and soil that may look solid but they aren’t.

As well, the river is still extremely cold, so added with the higher and faster flow from the snow melt, it is extremely dangerous. Velonas also reminds everyone that the lower Meewasin Trail with melting snow, ice shelves and muddy conditions prone to erosion are also not safe in the spring, so instead keep to the main paved trail away from the river’s edge for now.
