Saskatoon paramedics responded to their first motorcycle crash of 2023 on Monday. The accident was between a motorcycle and a vehicle, and has prompted the release of a safety reminder when it comes to watching out for the bikes.
Troy Davies, the Director of Public Affairs for Medavie Health Services West, says there are two main threats to motorcycle drivers as they take their bikes out for the warm weather; gravel and other vehicles.
Davies adds that gravel to motorcycles is like ice to vehicles. The street sweeping process has begun in Saskatoon, but the upcoming snow will delay that process, and should also delay motorcycle drivers from hitting the roads.
He says if a motorcycle happens to lose control due to gravel, wearing full length pants and shirts will eliminate severe road rash.
Davies also mentions that vehicle drivers should shoulder check for motorcycles, as the sensors on most vehicles won’t always pick them up.
