A CUPE sponsored report says the SaskParty government hasn’t properly planned for or invested in long-term care.
The Carleton University report says while demographics over the last ten years indicates to need for more long-term care spaces, the number has actually been reduced.
According to the report, the number of beds fell from 9.240 in 2001 to 8,517 in 2018.
CUPE says closing beds at Grenfell and District Pioneer home and Regina’s Pioneer Village was devastating on workers, families and the communities.
The report states the Conference Board of Canada conservatively estimates Saskatchewan will need an additional 4,648 long-term care beds by 2035.
CUPE questions the ability of what it calls a developing private pay alternative to meet the needs of the province’s elderly in the future.
