Saskatchewan is the only jurisdiction in Canada where all family medicine seats were filled in the first round this year. That’s according to the final match results released today (Fri) from the Canadian Resident Matching Service. All Canadian medical students expecting to graduate in the spring, as well as medical graduates who are internationally trained, apply through the resident matching service in hopes of securing a post-graduate training spot.
Health Minister Paul Merriman says he is pleased to hear of the success of the medical residency match. He notes that on average, nearly 80 per cent of family medicine residents who train in Saskatchewan, stay in the province. The news release cites that all 128 medical residency seats posted in Saskatchewan have been filled and of those, 54 were filled by students graduating from the University of Saskatchewan’s College of Medicine.
