Maple Creek RCMP reported Wednesday that a 64-year-old man had been arrested and charged with sexual assault and sexual interference and since then another person has come forward as an alleged victim. On Tuesday, Maple Creek RCMP were told that a man had sexually assaulted a male youth during a sport-related trip during the early 2000s.
Sixty-four-year-old Dexter Bascu was arrested the next day and then he made his first appearance in Swift Current Provincial Court. That same day, another person came forward. Bascu was re-arrested on Thursday and is now facing another count each of sexual assault and sexual interference.
RCMP believe there may be more victims. He was a long-time teacher in Maple Creek and continued as a substitute teacher until recently. Chinook School Division says he is no longer an employee. Bascu has also volunteered in local youth sports and music programming, including as a coach and trip chaperone.
The RCMP urge that if you are a survivor of sexual assault of if you have any information, contact the police or submit information anonymously through Saskatchewan Crime Stoppers.
