SGI has taken a new approach for this month’s Traffic Safety Spotlight. Spokesperson Tyler McMurchy says impaired driving is often the focus of their message, so this month they are focusing on a particular aspect of impaired driving just to switch things up a bit – driving after day drinking. The message from SGI is that you can still have a good time, just make a plan to have a safe ride home.
McMurchy cites that 35 per cent of Saskatchewan’s impaired driving collisions happen between the hours of 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. He says, “Whether your plans are having mimosas at brunch, getting a head-start on Happy Hour, hitting the patio of your local pub, or meeting some buds at 4:20, the important thing is to make sure you don’t drive after drinking or using drugs.”
McMurchy adds that anyone in the Saskatoon area may notice more of a police presence today (Wed)and tomorrow. Police officers specializing in traffic enforcement from across the province are converging on Saskatoon and will have check stops at several locations around the city, as part of the Selective Traffic Enforcement Program. They will be looking for impaired drivers, along with other high-risk driving behaviours. This is the first of six STEP projects that will be happening in communities across Saskatchewan this year.
