Rotary Clubs have been positively impacting communities across the country for over 100 years. The five clubs in Saskatoon have initiated programs such as the Restorative Action Program to end bullying in high schools across the city, the Hope Restored program that assists women in escaping harmful situations such as trafficking, and funding scholarships at Saskatchewan Polytechnic.
Brenda Banbury, the Conference Co-Chair, says District 5550, one out of 529 districts, is holding their District Conference in Saskatoon this weekend. She adds that the event is entitled ImaginAction, and encourages members to take action on the helpful ideas that they envision. As part of this, Rotarians will be spending their Friday serving breakfast at the Friendship Inn, the Saskatoon Indian and Metis Friendship Centre, Oskayak School, and both St. Frances Cree Bilingual schools. They will also be cleaning the riverbank along the Meewasin Trail, hosting a Canadian Citizenship Ceremony, and honouring members of the Saskatoon Tribal Council for their work during the pandemic.
Banbury says the STC organized a vaccine drop-in center as well as worked very hard to address homelessness and social issues. Club members will also take part in a learning session on the importance of Indigenous heritage, culture, and reconciliation at Wanuskewin Heritage Park.
