Thirty firefighters from Saskatoon, Martensville, Warman, Prince Albert, and North Battleford had the opportunity to receive survival training yesterday (Thurs), as well as skills to assist firefighters with self-rescue. Saskatoon Fire Department Assistant Chief Anthony Tataryn says the session focused on preparing participants to make split-second decisions, training firefighters on how to conserve air, as well as create more instructorship within the organization.
Six instructors shared with the class that there have been several deaths where firefighters were found with their breathing apparatus removed and taught them how to be cognizant of how much air is left in their tank and breathing techniques to conserve air. Tataryn adds that just like firefighters, citizens caught in a house fire should know that the air closest to the floor is the safest.
The group of 30 left the course as registered instructors and are able to share the information they learned with their crews.
