In an effort to bring affordable housing to Saskatoon, SaskNative Rentals, along with Camponi Housing, the City of Saskatoon, and the Government of Saskatchewan have committed to building 73 new homes at a location on Hart Road for over 150 Saskatoon families. MLA Lisa Lambert says the Government of Saskatchewan is proud to support the project with up to $1.7 million in funding.
Seventeen homes coming out of the project will be designed to be accessible to those with mobility issues. Dean Fetch, Chairperson of SaskNative Rentals, says although the homes will be mainly prioritized for Metis people, there are no restrictions on who can apply. This project has a huge emphasis on developing a sense of community.
Councilor David Kirton says the design process was a collaboration of people from the community, future tenants, and community leaders. When picking a location, it was taken into account that those who live there may not have vehicles. Therefore, an area close to amenities was required.
Mayor Charlie Clark says, “This is coming at a time where we know more affordable housing options across the entire housing spectrum are needed.” His comment was timely, as right now, Mayor Clark, along with nine other community leaders, is participating in the Sanctum Survivor Challenge. They are spending 36 hours on the streets of Saskatoon to highlight the struggles of homelessness.
