Humboldt Housing Authority has stepped up to provide temporary housing for the next few months to residents now without a home after a condo fire in the Saskatchewan city on Thursday.

At 12:35 a.m. the Humboldt and District Fire Department was dispatched to a report of a fire at 607-10th Street which is home to a 24-unit condominium complex.

A news release from the City of Humboldt says the fire started on the balcony of a unit in the top southwest corner that quickly spread to the attic. Firefighters were able to keep the fire to the top floor and had the fire contained by approximately 3:00 a.m. Thursday morning. The origin of the fire is under investigation.

Thirty-eight residents were safely evacuated, assessed on scene by paramedics, and treated as necessary.

The Pioneer Hotel provided immediate accommodations and the Red Cross is stepping in with short term assistance over the next few days. Humboldt Fire Department units returned several hours after the fire had been extinguished to deal with a hot spot.
