Saskatoon’s Chief of Police is on board with a plan to appoint an independent body to investigate serious incidents involving police including those resulting in injuries or death.
Troy Cooper feels both the public and police will benefit from the process which will ensure transparency.
Cooper believes it will allow independence when police actions are being reviewed and police will have confidence in the quality of the investigations.
Justice Minister Don Morgan is behind the plan.
He says it’s unacceptable to have other police agencies conduct the investigations which are then reviewed by a provincially-appointed official who reports back to the justice ministry.
Morgan says officials are working out the details surrounding the implementation of the civilian-led agency.
The change in police oversight has the unanimous endorsement of the Saskatchewan Association Chiefs of Police.
