Construction on the Humboldt Broncos Tribute Centre, that was estimated to take place in 2023, has yet to begin, as the project is still in its fundraising phase.
Chairman of the Humboldt Broncos Memorial Committee Rob Muench says in 2021, the City of Humboldt and the committee set fundraising goal of $35 million. He adds that this number hinged on whether they received support from the provincial or federal governments. The committee was not successful in their application for the Investing in Canadian Infrastructure grant, and therefore the fundraising goal was dropped to roughly $20 million.
Although the budget is smaller, the facility will still feature the two main aspects that the community wishes for most. The gifts the team has received over the last five years will all be on display in one area to commemorate the team, and an additional ice surface will be built, as well. As it stands, many athletes have to travel outside the community to enjoy their sport and get time on the ice.
The tribute centre will be connected to the ice surface, which will also be attached to Humboldt’s current arena, the Elgar Petersen Arena. To help raise money for the project, the Humboldt Broncos Memorial Committee is selling 50/50 tickets as well as lottery tickets for a chance to win a customized motorcycle. Tickets can be purchased at broncostributecampaign.com, and draws will be made on August 11th and 12th.
