Construction is underway on the new, three-story St. Frances Cree Bilingual School that is being relocated from Bateman Crescent to 7th Street East, the former site of Sion Middle School. St. Frances Cree Bilingual School was established in 2007 and currently operates out of two locations in Saskatoon. The school that began with only 100 students now has over 700, and that growth is prompting an upgrade.
Board of Education Chair of Greater Saskatoon Catholic Schools Diane Boyko says the new school, expected to be complete by fall of 2025, will offer a STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, and math) lab, a greenhouse, an Elder space, a medicines lab, performing spaces, and a Child and Family Wellness Centre. The Government of Saskatchewan is investing $45.9 million into the project.
The pre-kindergarten to Grade 9 school will focus on letting Indigenous students discover their identity, history, and culture, however students without Indigenous heritage are welcome, as well. Saskatoon Tribal Chief Mark Arcand says this school is a huge cause for celebration, as it will correct the historical wrongs of residential schools and how Indigenous children were stripped of their culture.
He adds that he wishes he had a school like this one to attend when he was a child, and says he hopes his son will be able to attend it in the future.
