A 42-year-old man is in a hospital in Regina with serious injuries after an attempted arrest on Tuesday. Because of this, the Saskatchewan Serious Incident Response Team is investigating after being contacted by the Regina Police Service.

On Tuesday morning, members of the Saskatchewan Internet Child Exploitation Unit executed a search warrant at a Regina home and officers told a 42-year-old man he was under arrest. Police report that prior to being taken into custody, the man got a knife from a drawer and began stabbing himself in the chest. First aid was provided before the man was taken to hospital where he currently remains in serious condition.

A SIRT team was deployed to investigate the conduct of police during the incident, including the circumstances around his arrest and the cause of his injury. SIRT’s mandate is to independently investigate incidents where someone has died or being seriously injured from the actions of on and off-duty police officers, or while in police custody, as well as allegations of sexual assault or interpersonal violence involving police.

The ICE Unit will continue to conduct its investigation into the man and his actions.
