The province is investing $4.5-million over the next 4 years for 2 groups to deliver an intervention program to reduce gang violence. STR8 UP in Saskatoon and Regina Treaty Status Indian Services will provide outreach, intervention and prevention services to help people leave gangs and reintegrate back into their communities.
Corrections and Policing Minister Christine Tell describes the Community Intervention Model as a key pillar in the government’s gang violence reduction strategy. Along with helping clients leave gangs, the C-I-M will help clients to prepare for employment, education and training opportunities. The 2 groups are expected to provide services to around 100 gang members over 4 years.
Last spring, the federal government gave the province $11.9-million as part of its Take Action Against Gun and Gang Violence initiative.
