Southern Saskatchewan is under an air quality statement due to wildfire smoke from Alberta. Smoke is causing or expected to cause poor air quality and reduced visibility. Conditions should improve by Tuesday morning. This wildfire smoke is impacting an area stretching from the Alberta border through Swift Current, Moose Jaw, Regina, up towards Craik, Lipton, and across to Moosomin.
There are 47 wildfires burning in Saskatchewan and eight of those are out of control. There have been 282 wildfires to date in Saskatchewan and 200 is the five year average. Wildfire smoke is also impacting northern Saskatchewan, many of the areas which have been experiencing wildfire smoke from Saskatchewan fires for weeks. La Loche, Candle Lake, Prince Albert National Park, La Ronge, Buffalo Narrows even as far north as the boundary with the Northwest Territories are also under an air quality statement.
The wind is helping blow in that wildfire smoke with winds for much of Saskatchewan Monday out of the west or northwest gusting to 50 and 60 kilometres per hour. For Saskatoon by Monday afternoon the wind out of the west will be 50 gusting to 70 kilometres per hour.
