There is a new phone scam where a fraudster mimics the phone identification of Saskatoon Light and Power and says the resident or business owes money, and if they don’t pay their power will be shut off. The City of Saskatoon says a number of people have called City Hall about this.
The City stresses that demanding ‘pay or have your power cut off’ messages are never sent from Saskatoon Light and Power. The City never requests or collects credit card or bank account information by phone, test or email. The City also advises not to give your your personal or banking information or credit card number over the phone, or by text or email and don’t click on suspicious web links.
If you have been a victim or fraud, contact your bank and report this type of phone or online scam to Saskatoon Police and the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.
