Distracted driving is SGI’s Traffic Safety Spotlight for August.
Spokesperson Tyler McMurchy says driver distraction and inattention were consistently among the top five contributing factors in intersection collisions in Saskatchewan over the past five years.
SGI and police across the province are reminding drivers to pay close attention.
Two months ago, the June Traffic Spotlight showed 1,096 distracted driving offences, including 970 tickets for using a cell phone while driving.
This is the first time since the cost of a ticket was substantially increased that the number has gone over 1,000.
McMurchy says on average over the past five years, 29 per cent of fatalities and 60 per cent of injuries on Saskatchewan roads happen in intersection collisions.
