The Saskatchewan Teachers Federation says there are still many questions around the Government’s new pronoun policy. STF President Samantha Becotte says it puts teachers in a tough spot, because they need to follow a directive set out by the government or uphold students’ human rights. As well, there was no consultation on the policy for teachers, school boards or school divisions.
She explains that it is up to the school divisions to lay out what the framework will be. Becotte says while the education minister put out the directive, teachers should look to their local school divisions, which are their employers, but the STF has seen school divisions across the province already questioning the policy.
At the core, Becotte adds, teachers want to ensure students are safe and cared for, and that’s what they will be striving for when students begin the new school year. The STF is waiting for more details and clarification about how the pronoun policy will be reinforced. Becotte says the STF is against the pronoun policy, but the hope legal action isn’t needed to resolve issues. (CKRM)
