As students and teaches head back to school, the President of the Saskatchewan Teachers’ Federation highlights what she calls a crisis caused by years of underfunding.
Samantha Becotte points to a recent report from the Fraser Institute which states that between 2012 and 2020, Saskatchewan had the second highest increase in student enrolment among the provinces, while also seeing the second largest decrease in per-student funding.
She believes the provincial government is refusing to take the responsibility for issues like crowded classrooms, a lack of access to the professional resources that students rely on, and year-over-year budget cuts, which affect student learning.
Becotte quotes the government’s slogan “Growth that works for everyone”, saying that this growth isn’t working for the schools and children of the province.
