It was another strong performance from the Men’s Soccer team at Griffiths Stadium, even though it resulted in a 1-1 tie. Coming off their first win at home yesterday afternoon, the Huskies had a more than acceptable bounce back onto the field to end of the weekend with 4 out of a possible 6 points.
**********
The Huskies came out the gate very strong, directing their first shot of the game on net from Diego Reveco but was an easy save for Vikes netminder Callum Weir. Then at the 18-minute mark of the first half, Ahmed Mohammed had his shot blocked right in front of the net leaving Diego Reveco with a great chance all alone but sent it directly over the net.
Victoria would finally register their first shot of the game at the 28-minute mark thanks to Harry Ritter, although the Vikes would struggle to find consistent time in the offensive zone. Not too long after the first goal of the game came from Ethan Cabral thanks to an incredible pass from Diego Reveco. Cabral fired the ball off the crossbar and in to give Saskatchewan a 1-0 lead with his third on the season, but it wouldn’t last long. 3 minutes later, a free kick from Jimmy Steel sets up a beautiful header for Yassin Guitouni to quickly tie the game 1-1. The remainder of the half seen both teams registering a shot each, but generated no substantial pressure on either side of the field. The Huskies recorded 8 shots while Victoria only had 3.
**********
The second half started off the same way as the first ended, not much pressure from either side. Ethan Cabral had a shot for the Huskies a few minutes into the half, but after that Victoria began to up the pressure. A Corner Kick at the 52-minute mark from Jordan McKinty set up Fin Tugwell in front of the net for what looked like a sure goal, but Huskies netminder made his best save as he just got enough of his fingers on the ball to redirect it just over the crossbar.
Later on the Huskies would begin to find their game again and apply pressure. Off a Vikes turnover at the 70-minute mark, the Huskies had great chances in front of the net once again with Diego Reveco firing a shot on net that was turned aside by Callum Weir for the second time this game, but would get another chance immediantly after but shot it wide of the net. A free kick shortly after for Ahmed Mohammed would find its way toward the net but once again missing just wide left.
Victoria would struggle to generate anything offensively, but the Huskies would continue to apply the pressure, only allowing 1 shot on net but would send 4 shots towards the net with only one actually getting on net. Even as the Huskies continued to apply pressure, time became a factor and resulted in a 1-1 tie.
