The NDP Party of Canada is demanding that the federal government take action to protect children from the Saskatchewan government pronoun policy for students. A release from the party implies that Saskatchewan’s government is dividing people and trampling on human rights with this policy.
Saskatchewan’s Premier told reporters on Friday he is determined to utilize whatever government resources are available to implement his Parental Inclusion and Consent policy.
The policy, which requires children under the age of 16 to get parental consent if they would like to change their names or pronouns at school, was challenged by UR Pride at the University of Regina. An interim injunction was sought out in court, and Thursday, one was granted, therefore pausing the policy’s implementation.
Scott Moe says by advancing the policy through utilizing the notwithstanding clause, he aims to provide clarity to Saskatchewan families and teachers. He intends to pass the legislation as quickly as possible and stated that his government will be recalling the Legislative Assembly on October 10 to do so. “Those implementation plans will be in effect sooner rather than later, to ensure that we are including our parents in our child’s life (and) our child’s education across the province,” Moe stated.
