Another successful home opener is in the books for Huskie Athletics this year thanks to the Men’s Hockey team putting on a dominant performance against the MacEwan Griffins, with the Huskies walking away with a 6-2 victory and a perfect 3-and-0 record. Six different Huskies got on the score sheet, including Justin Ball with another strong performance offensively

It didn’t take long for the Huskies to open the scoring with Chantz Petruic finding the back of the net just under two minutes into the first period with Cole Jordan and Carter Stebbings grabbing the assists. The Dogs wouldn’t slow down there as the first period was a very dominant one, with defenceman Gunner Kinniburgh grabbing his first of the season and Vince Loschiavo doing the same towards the end of the first period. Although shots were 9-8 in favor of the Huskies in the first, Jordan Kooy stayed strong in net leading to another dominant performance for him on the early season.
The second period was another dominant period from Saskatchewan with a little more push back from the Griffins. MacEwan had the first great chance of the period but Kooy was able to stretch across the crease to deny the cross-crease feed to keep the game 3-0. Jaxan Kaluski joined in on the scoring later in the second with Justin Ball adding a goal to close out the period capping off a 3-point performance.
Former Blades forward Josh Pillar grabbed the sixth goal of the evening for the Huskies early on in the third after killing of their first and only penalty of the game, and from that point on the game remained a steady back-and-forth, with Loeden Schaufler finally finding the back of the net for MacEwan halfway into the frame with Vincent Scott grabbing another goal in the final 30 seconds of the game. Even with the late two goals allowed, goalie Jordan Kooy had himself another solid performance in net with 28 saves in the 6-2 victory. Both teams have a quick turnaround as they hit the ice again at 5:00 Saturday afternoon at Merlis Belsher Place.
