If you’re selling your vehicle or just cancelling your registration SGI recommends you remove the vehicle’s license plate and either return it to SGI or secure it for future use in a safe place.
SGI says plate numbers will always be associated with the customer it was last issued to, so it’s important to protect licence plates from being lost or falling into the wrong hands.
SGI says if you don’t return your licence plate and a vehicle is driven with your old licence plate, you could get a traffic ticket (such as a photo speed enforcement ticket or a red-light camera ticket) or parking ticket issued in your name. While you may be able to successfully appeal the ticket you won’t get your time and effort back in order to do so.
