The City of Saskatoon has launched its organics education campaign for businesses and organizations, after the residential program began last spring. A news release from the City says enforcement won’t happen until next year at this time to give businesses and organizations time to meet the new bylaw regulation. All businesses and organizations that generate food or yard waste as part of their operations are required to have separate bins to divert organics from the garbage.
Jeanna South, Director of Sustainability, says, “Businesses and organizations generate 68 per cent of the garbage in our community. Approximately 25 per cent is organic waste that could be rescued or composted.” The Solid Waste Reduction and Diversion Plan includes organic waste diversion for all sectors to be phased in over the next few years. South says a residential multi-unit organics program pilot for those with the large communal bins is set to start later. She adds that with the new green cart program, the City has already diverted over 11,000 tonnes of food and yard waste from the landfill.
