The tally from a week of targeted enforcement initiatives is in. It was held during National Safe Driving Week from December 1st to 7th.
Saskatchewan RCMP say officers checked 10,441 vehicles and laid a total of 2,137 road safety charges including 1,291 for speeding, 60 for cellphone use, 83 for seatbelt misuse and 44 charges of careless driving.
Some of the highlights include a driver stopped after being clocked going 183 kilometres an hour in a 100 km/h zone on Highway 7 near Kindersley. His reward was an $1168.00 fine.
On December 3rd, a driver was stopped for travelling 54 kilometres an hour in a 30 km/h school zone in Prince Albert. Police allege the driver did not have a valid license, the vehicle registration had expired, the windshield had numerous cracks plus a baby was in a booster seat not fully secured and the belt straps weren’t tightened. The driver was fined in total $1346.00.
On December 5th, an officer on patrol saw a vehicle drift out of its lane on Highway 1 near Balgonie. The officer says when they pulled up alongside, the driver was holding a tablet on the steering wheel. The driver apparently told the officer he was trying to log on for a conference call. The driver missed his call and has to pay a $280.00 fine.
