With a $1 million donation from the Kinsmen Foundation, the Cancer Foundation of Saskatchewan’s Breast Cancer Screening Bus campaign has reached its fundraising goal of $2 million. CEO of the Cancer Foundation, Nora Yeates, says over the past 20 years the bus has facilitated more than 250,000 potentially life saving screening mammograms in rural and northern communities. Yeates says many improvements will be made in the next vehicle. The current bus isn’t very accessible and is a bit narrow. As well, two of the four air conditioners don’t work and it is difficult to level, which is needed for the equipment to operate.
The next screening vehicle may be a bus or it could be a truck and trailer or an RV. Yeates says those decisions are in the works.
Chair of the Kinsmen Foundation Board of Directors, Raelynn Nicholson, says thanks to the generosity of TeleMiracle donors, they are honoured to enable the continuation of this crucial service for years to come.
Breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer in women and the second leading cause of their death. It is estimated 760 Saskatchewan women will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year and 170 will die from the disease.
