A Tire Recycling and Processing Review is now complete, and the Government of Saskatchewan says Tire Stewardship of Saskatchewan will be pursuing a contract with Saskatoon processor Shercom for recycling tires in the northern part of the province.
Contract renewal negotiations between Shercom and TSS fell through in May and Shercom stopped accepting used Saskatchewan tires. As well it was no longer going to be processing tires but would source crumb rubber from processors outside the province.
Former Deputy Minister to the Premier and former Deputy Minister of Environment Cam Swan was appointed to review TSS’s procurement practices, assess future needs of tire recycling and processing, and provide advice to the Minister of Environment.
In the wake of that review the TSS board has committed to: strengthen TSS procurement practices through SaskBuilds and Procurement; update the current payment approach and model to align with other jurisdictions; ensure the environmental goals of the program are met with improved communication between industry and TSS management.
Crumb Rubber Manufacturing, a U.S. company, will continue to be the processor for the southern part of the province, via a facility in Moose Jaw.
