A concerning substance was found at the Newo Yotina Friendship Center’s drug testing site in Regina. The Regina Police Service says it is believed to have been sold as fentanyl. The drug contained by fentanyl and xylazine, which as a combination presents an even more heightened risk of overdose and death. The Police Service explains that xylazine is an animal tranquilizer which lowers heart rate, blood pressure and affects breathing, and its effects cannot be reversed with naloxone. It is believed the substance, described as being purple, originated from a larger batch of pills which is likely circulating in Regina.
