The Official Opposition is looking for answers from the provincial government after the Sunrise Motel, which is owned by Sask Party MLA Gary Grewal appears to have raised the rates for motel stays of Ministry of Social Services recipients, according to the NDP. Ethics and Democracy Critic, Meara Conway says senior Evelyn Harper was evicted from her government housing unit and with nowhere to go, she found a room at the motel at the rate of $132 per night. The Ministry of Social Services committed to covering her motel costs and Conway says since then the price rose to $168.55 a night, followed by another raise to $200 a night. The NDP says when booked online, the average cost for a room at the Sunrise Motel is between $71 and $80 a night.
A statement from Executive Council says the NDP are making serious and unfounded allegations. The statement explains that Social Services doesn’t typically pay damage deposits, but the motel requires a $200 deposit, so room charges appear higher. As well, Evelyn Harper has been placed in stable housing and no longer requires a motel room.
