Self-determination will be one of the topics of discussion at this weekend’s Metis Nation Legislative Assembly in Saskatoon.
Metis Nation-Saskatchewan President Glen McCallum explains that earlier this year, Bill C-53 was introduced in the House of Commons. It’s about recognizing certain Metis governments in Alberta, Ontario and Saskatchewan and it’s the first step in a process that has been underway since 1885.
McCallum says the process will see Canada recognizing Metis people in a meaningful way, moving closer to true self-determination.
There are special guests from other governments at the MNLA today. Metis Nation Canada, the Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations, Saskatoon’s Mayor and Premier Scott Moe are attending the opening ceremony.
Glen McCallum says the opening speech will be about highlighting some of the successes over the last year including moving toward self-governance.
