Saskatchewan’s Premier and Athabasca MLA Jim Lemaigre stood side by side in a social media post to announce that the carbon tax will no longer be collected on electric heat as of January 1st.
Back in October, Premier Scott Moe announced that Sask Energy won’t be collecting the tax on natural gas in response to the federal government’s temporary exemption of home heating oil. MLA Jim Lemaigre stated that most northern residents don’t use natural gas. They use electric heat.
Moe noted that about 85 per cent of Saskatchewan residents use natural gas and many in the other 15 per cent use electric heat, so because SaskPower is a Crown Corporation, owned by the people of this province, the decision has been made to stop paying the carbon tax on electric heat as well. Moe says they will have to figure out who is using electric heat and then estimate how much of their monthly use comes from heating.
