Two municipalities which will be affected by the transition from coal power are receiving provincial funding. Agriculture Minister David Marit announced $550,000 for the Town of Coronach and the RM of Hart Butte to support greener coal-based opportunities. Both are members of South Saskatchewan Ready, which is an alliance of nine municipalities in south central Saskatchewan.
SSR has identified Videre Energy’s pilot project as a priority coal transition project for the area. The technology presented by Videre takes coal and converts it to a lower greenhouse gas emission product to support the energy and agriculture sectors. In a news release, the provincial government says federal regulations require all coal-fired power stations be closed by 2030, which will impact three power stations, two mines and hundreds of jobs in southern Saskatchewan.
