The Saskatoon Police Service says the dangerous strain of fentanyl that Saskatchewan RCMP warned is in the Moose Jaw and Swift Current areas is also in Saskatoon. It is believed to be cut with xylazine, a veterinary sedative that is resistant to naloxone, which is what is administered to temporarily reverse the effects of an opioid overdose.
The Police Service doesn’t have any numbers for overdoses connected to this fentanyl strain though, because only the Saskatchewan Coroners Service can confirm than an overdose caused a death and which drugs may have contributed to it.
If you witness an overdose and are worried about getting into trouble, police remind the public that the Good Samaritan Drug Overdose Act provides legal protection for those who experience or witness an overdose and seek emergency help. Symptoms of an overdose include, but are not limited to slow or no breathing; gurgling, gasping or snoring; clammy and cool skin; blue lips or nails; and difficulty waking up or staying awake. If you suspect someone may have overdosed, call 911.
