Although Family Service Saskatoon has been part of the community for 93 years, they are still one of the best kept secrets in Saskatoon. That’s according to Faith Rowland, Family Service Saskatoon’s fund development officer, who adds that they have been at the heart of many community service initiatives through the years. She describes FSS as a local non-profit organization which provides counselling, group programs, supports for individuals, families and couples, to help them develop stronger relationship skills, communication skills and parenting skills, and they do a lot of work around family violence and violence prevention.
Rowland says FSS understands that the stigma attached to mental illness, the high cost of private counselling and not knowing where to go to find the supports needed can be a hindrance for people seeking help. Because financial considerations should never be a barrier to getting the help needed, Rowland stresses that their programs are heavily subsidized for those that require consideration for their financial situation and many programs are free, including their Family Violence programming, programs for youth at risk and Rapid Access Counselling.
Family Service Saskatoon’s first ever Radiothon is raising funds to support counselling services for Saskatoon’s most vulnerable people.
