The Regina Police Service has a new communication tool to assist officers and members of the public who are deaf or hard of hearing or whose preferred language is not English.
It’s a card which allows officers to explain the reason for the traffic stop and what they need the driver to do.
It also allows the driver to communicate with the officers.
All patrol and traffic officers carry the cards in their vehicles.
This initiative is a cooperative effort from the Police Service, Saskatchewan Deaf and Hard of Hearing Services and the Regina Open Door Society.
A spokesperson for the Saskatoon Police Service says they don’t have a card which would help anyone who is deaf, but a they have a translation card to assist in interactions with people whose first language is not English.
