A recent CAA Saskatchewan study reports that the top 2 dangerous driving behaviours in a school zone are speeding and distracted driving and for pedestrians, the top 2 risky behaviours are jaywalking and failing to look both ways. You may witness some of these habits today (Mon) with school back in session.
CAA spokesperson, Christine Niemczyk, advises both drivers and pedestrians to be aware that in the winter, it might not be that easy to stop at an intersection. Drivers should proceed according to the weather and road conditions and students, parents and caregivers should remember to look both ways and make sure the vehicles are all at a stop before crossing.
Niemczyk says they have noticed at pedestrian crosswalks with lights, some children immediately cross the road after hitting the walk button, but there may be a few second delay before the light is activated, so she cautions to wait a moment before crossing.
The general advice from the CAA, which is good for all occasions is to be alert and be aware of your surroundings.
