It has been just over a year since the Regina Police Service Aerial Support Unit became a reality and the impact has been a positive one.
ASU Pilot, Sgt. Steve Wyatt, says, “We immediately saw the impact we could have from both an officer safety perspective and for the public too. When we are able to work with ground units to stop a suspect driving at high speeds in a stolen car, simply by following them via the ‘eye in the sky’ until they stop, this prevents so many possible negative outcomes.”
Between January 20th of last year and the end of January this year, the Regina ASU has been responsible for over 2,600 calls for service, 583 persons charged and over 1,200 charges laid.
Saskatoon’s police plane first took flight in 2005.
