You likely won’t see lower prices at the pump anytime soon. Patrick De Haan, Petroleum Analyst with Gas Buddy.com says refinery issues in Indiana since the start of the month are contributing to the rise in prices but he adds that there will be other factors in the coming weeks.
“As we get into mid to late February, we’ll start getting into other refineries that are going to start their routine maintenance before the summer starts, really before the spring is over, combined with the fact that we generally start seeing demand going back up as temperatures start warming back up in March.”
He suggests prices could rise above the $1.40 a litre mark in the next few weeks and prices could potentially be 20 to 40 cents a litre higher by May long weekend.
De Haan added that a change to more expensive summer gasoline in a couple weeks will also have an impact.
