According to Statistics Canada, the energy sector contributed almost one-tenth to Canada’s nominal gross domestic product in the first half of 2019. During that time, the energy sector directly employed over a quarter of a million people and indirectly supported many jobs in other sectors of the economy. In October, energy production in Canada declined in several sectors compared to the same month in 2018. Taking the biggest hit was coal production, down 9.3 per cent.
