Saskatoon product Luca Veeman is SaskSport’s Athlete-of-the-Month for February.
Veeman helped Canada to a gold medal in the long-track Team Pursuit event at the World Junior Speedskating Championship last month in Japan, then added a silver medal in the Team Sprint race. Training out of the Olympic Oval in Calgary, Veeman was part of Canada’s silver medal-winning Team Sprint squad at an I-S-U Junior World Cup meet earlier in February. Team pursuit and sprint success claims Luca Veeman February Athlete of the Month (SASKATOON) March 11, 2024 – In his third World Junior Speed Skating Championship, Luca Veeman claimed gold and silver medals in team events to be named February Athlete of the Month. Saskatoon’s Veeman helped Canada to a gold medal in the long-track Team Pursuit and followed that performance with a silver medal in the Team Sprint event. The World Junior Championship was held in Hachinohe, Japan in mid-February. Individually, Veeman competed in the 1,000-metre (16th), 5,000-m (17th) and mass start (seventh) events. Earlier in the month at an ISU Junior World Cup, Veeman won a silver medal in the Team Sprint and finished eighth in the 1,500-m. Veeman currently trains in Calgary at the Olympic Oval in the National Training Centre program. He was nominated by Saskatchewan Amateur Speed Skating Association.
