The “gut” decision to leave Serbia for Canada was based on the belief of a better life for his family.
In part four of CJWW’s five part series Dr. Velimir Milenkovic points to early indications that he made the right decision.
The first two years were challenging as he worked several jobs to help make ends meet in a new country with a much higher cost of living while financing a two-year medical licensing process that cost about 10-thousand dollars.
There was also time for leisure.
Dr. Milenkovic remembers taking his young son and pregnant wife to a hockey game at SaskTel Centre noting there was no violence in the stands.
He says sporting events in Serbia often featured fights with spectators even getting stabbed.
Dr. Milenkovic also enjoyed going on walks with his family knowing it’s safe on the city’s pathways unlike Serbia.
He was also amused to hear Saskatoon referred to as Canada’s crime capital.
The Serbian professional says the crime situation in Saskatchewan’s largest city is like kindergarten compared to other parts of the world he has experienced.
Tomorrow, Dr. Milenkovic looks back at his six-year journey from Serbia to Saskatoon.
