Mark Tennant is closely following the championship team he coached into the Canada West Conference Hall-of-Fame.
The head coach of the U of S women’s volleyball program from 1971 to 1997, directed the Huskiettes to three consecutive Canada West and C-I-A-U titles between 1979 and 81. That team was inducted into the Canada West shrine earlier this week…and Tennant went in Thursday. In all, he led the Huskie women’s volleyball program to seven Conference championships and into 10 national tournaments. Following is the news release from the Canada West Conference…
Three-peat architect Tennant tapped for Hall of Fame
Saskatchewan women’s volleyball coach honoured by Canada West
EDMONTON – Mark Tennant spent a quarter of a century as head coach of women’s volleyball at the University of Saskatchewan, where he guided the team to a historic national championship three-peat.
Saskatchewan struck national gold in 1979, 1980 and 1981, becoming the first team in any CIAU sport to win the championship three years in a row. Overall, Tennant’s Huskies won seven Canada West titles and appeared at 10 national tournaments during his tenure.
Tennant was announced Thursday as the latest Canada West Hall of Famer. He was also inducted earlier this week as part of the Huskiettes dynasty team.
From his arrival at the U of S in 1971 through his final season in 1996-97, he posted a 227-139 all-time record and won the CIAU Coach of the Year award four times.
His legacy lives on annually, as the U SPORTS women’s volleyball rookie of the year award is named in his honour.
