In what was termed a fireside chat in Vancouver Thursday, Bank of Canada Governor Stephen Poloz touched on several topics: the economy; financial markets; global trade policy; labour and housing markets; and the five dollar bill.
He says the Bank of Canada is close to announcing plans for a new $5 bank note. Poloz says they want the country’s bank notes to continue to evolve to include the latest security features.
The Bank of Canada will also soon launch public consultations about who should appear on the new $5 note. Poloz says it will be a similar process to the public consultations that led to choosing Viola Desmond for the new $10 bill. However, this time, the Bank of Canada will ask all Canadians to nominate any historic Canadian.
