Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says preliminary details from intelligence sources suggests the Ukrainian plane that crashed was shot down by an Iranian surface to air missile.
Trudeau says finding out whether it was intentional or accidental will depend on a full and transparent investigation.
The Prime Minister has called on Iranian authorities to include Canadians to be part of the investigative team saying the families of the 63 Canadians killed in the crash need answers.
Trudeau wouldn’t comment on the incident being the result of the U-S drone strike that killed a top Iranian military official saying the full investigation is needed before drawing any conclusions and wouldn’t speculate on any sanctions Canada may impose without that knowledge.
The Prime Minister says Canada has denounced the Iranian attacks on Iraqi military installations launched in retaliation of the U-S action. Canadian soldiers are stationed at one of those bases.
Canada severed formal diplomatic relations with Iran in 2012 but Trudeau says the foreign affairs ministers of both countries are discussing issues surrounding the crash including the establishment of consular services to help with the identification of the victims.
