The Cold Weather Strategy for the City of Saskatoon was activated last Wednesday and it continues through this extreme cold. The strategy is to ensure everyone has a safe place to sleep on these extremely cold nights. There are 11 warm up locations including The Lighthouse and AIDS Saskatoon. The City, along with the Saskatoon Housing Initiatives Partnership, the United Way and several emergency shelters provides the Cold Weather Strategy.
Some tips from the City’s Emergency Management Organization include making sure you are dressed for the weather and if it’s too cold for you to stay outside, it’s too cold and dangerous for your pet as well. It’s also a good idea to have a 72-hour emergency kit ready in case you need to evacuate or shelter-in-place, and have an emergency kit in your vehicle with extra warm clothes, blankets, candles and snacks.
Saskatoon Transit’s SafeBus program may be of service. If you are lost, cold, scared or hurt at any time of year, hold up your hand, palm out, in the direction of an approaching Transit bus, or go to a parked bus to get help.
